Description

LAVANDULA x intermedia ‘Fred Boutin’

Fred Boutin is a French hybrid lavender that has large, silver-grey leaves which is an awesome backdrop. It produces a profusion of slender, upright stems topped with purple flowers. It flowers later in the season than most other lavenders and blooms from mid-to-late summer. The flowers are highly fragrant and attracts bees and butterflies. The flowers are sterile, so no worries about self sowing…like that’s a bad thing…(I know, right). Lavandin ‘Fred Boutin’ was found in a garden in Los Gatos, California, around 1980 by Frederich Boutin, a botanist in California and introduced in 1984. When the blooms are done, they turn brown as they age and should be removed to encourage continuous flowering, although the first flush of flowers is always the best. It doesn’t like wet feet so don’t over water it and make sure it has good drainage. Makes a great hedge! It is most beautiful!! Buy some to pass out…or better yet, just keep them for yourself, invite people over to gawk at them and then tell them where to buy them!
