Description
Peppermint was first grown in 1750 near London, England as an experimental hybrid between water mint and spearmint. It is produced commercially in Indiana, Wisconsin, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Peppermint is the flavoring for candy, gum, desserts, beverages, salads, and other foods. People have also used peppermint to treat digestive problems for thousands of years. It is a natural decongestant. One of the herb’s active ingredients is menthol, which thins mucus and can loosen phlegm and reduce coughs. Like all mints, it is invasive. Plant with care. Give it lots of space or plant it in containers. You will fall in love with the wonderful fragrance the leaves give off.
